Finmere went on a scoring frenzy last Saturday as they over came Stewkley Development by eight goals to one, although quite where that scoreline came from is still a mystery as they had to wait until late in the first half to break the deadlock, and for a while after looked decidedly nervous.
Hattricks from Cam Thomas and then Ethan White inside ten minutes were somewhat over shadowed by a thunderbolt from Ollie Cain, a most ridiculous strike that defied all the odds to earn him the adulation of his team mates.
The visitors actually levelled the contest early in the second period and for a few moments looked the more likely to score again, however once the hosts got their noses in front once more it signalled for the merciless Fins to run riot!
The opening forty-five was end to end but with little threat to either keeper, the primary effort of note came late when Josh Maynard escaped down the amber & blacks right and flashed across the six-yard box but wide of the back post, from the restart their opponents then took the lead.
A free kick just outside the area floated in by White was met by the head of the unchallenged Thomas who steered past Development custodian Ben Potten, there was still time before the break for Maxwell Hicks to turn a Louis Cain delivery off target.
As the winter sun began to set the second half opened with opportunities for both teams, Ollie Cain from a narrow angle fired low across the face only for it to rebound off the far upright, a sign of things to come; for Stewkley Tom Faulkner drove over the bar.
Parity was restored soon after when a set piece eluded the grip of reds shot stopper Harvey Marshall-Stephens and Ryan Lafferty was quick off the mark to poke over the line, but within moments the hosts retook the lead despite the visitors enjoying some decent possession.
An attack high up the pitch stalled and the ball sent long down the right which Ollie Cain chased, just as it seemed he would run out of play he arrowed goalwards and it nestled in the top of the net, momentum taking the striker off-piste & almost towards the aerodrome!
He was mobbed by his rejoicing colleagues and their advantage stretched even further just six minutes later as a corner was recycled at the back stick by Rob How for Thomas to stab home, and it wasn’t long until his hattrick was complete.
His side were awarded a penalty when White was sandwiched as he headed from the edge of the area towards the target, the skipper making no mistake from the spot; after being fouled White then bagged his treble in quick succession.
His first perfectly struck from the eighteen-yard line over the outstretched arm of Potten, the next curled in from left of the box, and his third arrived after an initial shot crashed off the bar allowing him to stroke past the stricken keeper.
The scoring then dried up until the final few echelons, playing out from defence proved fateful as a pass straight to Ollie Cain gifted him the chance to net his brace. F/T: 8-1
