The opening game on Easter Sunday of the Ebac Northern League groundhop saw this Billingham derby conjure a somewhat surprising result as Synthonia beat local rivals Town, and for those adorned in green & white a most welcome three points in their battle against relegation.
Despite the traditional chocolate overload, plus a pleasantly warm and sunny morning that had the occasional downpour, it did not deter a good turnout once again, as over seven hundred and fifty stood pitchside at Bedford Terrace as the season edged closer to a conclusion.
Whilst those of a blue & white persuasion were left disappointed by the scoreline, their guests enjoyed their moment and ended the season in fine form, four wins and a draw in their last five matches enough to see them escape the dreaded drop.
Harvey Poole had the first chance of the game very early on, advancing down the right channel he blazed high over resident custodian George Briggs’ bar, at the opposing end Liam Southall flashed across the box but wide of the back post.
Spencer Evans then had a header that never really threatened, and on the quarter of an hour mark he was left to run at the Town goal when two defenders got in each other’s way, as he tried to round the keeper, the merest of touches took the ball from his path allowing the clearance to be made.
But just moments later the green pressure paid off as they won a free kick on the edge of the area, Harry Healy opting to go low and as the defensive wall jumped it curled underneath and, despite the outstretched hand of Briggs, nestled in the bottom corner.
From there chances were few and far between, Jack Lamb forced a save after the break and Evans screwed wide, in return John Stephenson crossed in towards Gary Mitchell but before he could threaten an equaliser a defender nodded away to safety.
As much as both teams huffed & puffed no further goals looked likely until the clock ticked over the ninety, Sam Irvine latching on to a ball through the hosts rear guard to advance and convert, an initial raised flag was overruled enabling the celebrations to begin in earnest.
The visitors still had time for another effort to be chalked off for offside, and to force the home keeper into another good save, although a foul in the build up may have intervened. F/T: 0-2
