Town boss Lee Hawkes reflected on Saturday’s outstanding result.
Firstly, a massive appreciation to Stanway for being able to get the game on and for hosting us within the short time frame. The game was certainly end to end throughout. Stanway pounced on first and second balls and we had to quickly stop their game plan. It was a cagey first 5/10 minutes for both teams in my opinion and both had chances early on. Stanway Rovers took the lead with a nice volley into the bottom corner. We reacted well and had chances, Luca had a fantastic volley inside their box where the keeper made a great save. Half time came and we felt we were still in the game, having the majority of the possession in the first half. We had better quality on the ball when we settled down and composed ourselves.
The first 5/10 minutes we survived a wave from Stanway and then we decided to start our own wave. We knew what we needed to do having spoke at half time and we were able to execute our game plan. Lawrence went on a great counter attacking run where the keeper again had to make a quality save, keeping the game 1-0. We were unfortunate not to score till late on with a solid effort from Jamie Cerminara. With the game ending 1-1 we went to penalties for the second time this season.
Even though we had won the previous round on pens I was more nervous this time around. Credit where credits due to all of the penalty takers, they definitely deserve the respect being able to hold their nerve and take one for the club. Especially our very own Luca who at 17 years of age took the winning penalty after an excellent Ross Tompkins save!
Thankfully the boys triumphed again and we see ourselves into the next round. A massive achievement for the club.
