Buckingham Town: Weekend round-up + Sunday 11th July report
REPORT: ANDREW HOLLAND
Banbury visited Buckingham on Saturday, and after winning the toss elected to bat first.
It was the hosts who made the better start though as Dean Bryce and George Humphries both struck early to reduce Banbury to 6 for 2. Charlie Hill counter attacked, scoring 18 and forcing a change in the bowling, but was bowled by Shane Shillingford with the score on 39. Skipper Lloyd Sabin was joined by Shazad Rana and the pair began to rebuild the innings, slowly at first, before Rana began to accelerate. They put on 64, Rana surviving a big shout for a catch at silly, up to the lunch break taking the score on to 103 for 3.
After the break both batsmen brought up their half centuries (Sabin – 92 balls, Rana – 59 balls) and the runs began to flow more steadily. Shillingford broke the stand of 95 though when Rana was caught on the boundary for 52. Ollie Clarke came in at number 6, and after a slow start began to carry on where Rana had left off. He put on 89 with his captain, and looked well set on 45 when he too was caught on the boundary off Shillingford. Josh Megson fell first ball in the next over, but Sabin, who had been playing the anchor role, went on to reach his century from 155 balls. With the overs running out he and Richard Simpson accelerated, putting on 77 in the last 8 overs to take Banbury up too 300 for 6 when they declared. Sabin finished on 139 and Simpson 30 (25 balls), and it left Buckingham a minimum of 57 overs to bat.
The run chase made a good start, with the returning Michael Wells looking in good touch from the off. Him and Harris Syed put on 44 for the opening wicket before Syed was trapped lbw for 15 off Liam Manley. Leigh Tomlinson joined Wells, and supported him through to tea which Buckingham reached on 76 for 1 from 18 overs. Wells bringing up a 45 ball half century just before the break.
All three results were possible after tea, and the Buckingham pair took the score past 100 with a second wicket stand of 68. The introduction of Clarke broke the partnership as Tomlinson was stumped for 21, before in the next over Wells was caught behind off David Eaton for 79 (77 balls). Adam King and Jack Deal (12) steadied the innings, and as the players took drinks before the start of the final hour Buckingham were 142 for 3 with 21 overs remaining. After his runs in the first innings, Sabin brought himself on to bowl, and in his second over took 2 wickets in 2 balls. In the next over Eaton had King caught behind for 19, and when Will Woodley fell to Sabin three overs later Buckingham had lost 4 wickets for 10 runs to leave them 159 for 7. Rob Large struck 20 late on, but Eaton removed Adam Bone for 4 and then Large himself to leave the last pair having to survive 51 balls. They weren’t able to do it as Eaton completed his five wicket haul and Buckingham were bowled out for 179.
