Buckingham Town CC: Weekend round-up 24th & 25th July 2021
1st XI – Report by Andrew Holland
Buckingham travelled to Henley on Saturday, and after winning the toss opted to bat first.
Henley started the stronger as the opening bowlers of Tom Nugent and Simon Wheeler picked up a wicket apiece in the early exchanges to reduce their visitors to 34 for 2. Michael Wells looked in good touch, carrying on his form from the previous week, and he led the recovery alongside Adam King. The pair put on an unbeaten 60, Wells reaching his half-century from 83 balls, as Buckingham went to lunch at 94 for 2.
Euan Woods made the breakthrough after lunch as he had King caught on the boundary for 29. Shortly after that Harry Jordan trapped Wells lbw for 64. Another wicket apiece for both Woods and Jordan followed and Buckingham had been reduced to 133 for 6. Shane Shillingford and Adam Bone began to rebuild the innings, slowly at first, and then speeding up as the overs began to run out. They put on 60 before Bone was caught behind off Jordan for 25. Shillingford fell in the penultimate over for 48 as Buckingham finished on 213 for 9. Jordan was the pick of the bowlers with 4 for 47.
Matt Rowe started the Henley run chase positively, taking the attack to the Buckingham bowlers. He scored 40 from 43 balls in an opening partnership of 66 with Michael Williams, and was looking comfortable when he edged Shillingford to slip. Skipper Michael Roberts came in at number 3, and alongside Williams saw the hosts through to the tea break with the score 99 for 1.
Buckingham needed early wickets to fight back into the game, but they were unable to do as the Henley pair dominated after the break. Williams was the first to bring up his half-century (87 balls) with Roberts following with his own (69 balls). They put on 106, and took their side to within 50 of victory when Buckingham brought Sikandar Rizwan into the attack and he broke the stand by dismissing Williams for 67. Richard Morris hit a quick-fire 15 before holing out on the boundary off Shillingford, with the new man Woods (10 not out off 5 balls) hitting the winning runs as Roberts top scored to finish 79 not out.
