A couple of wonderful Tamzin Hartwig strikes gave Leighton Woodside Women victory over Wheathampstead Wanderers two weeks ago, as these league high fliers battled it out in this Bedfordshire & Hertfordshire Third Division clash.
Two up by the interval seemed to give the hosts breathing space for the second period only for a late Daisy Scott goal to then halve the deficit, however even with the eight minutes plus added time the visitors couldn’t push on to find a leveller.
An overcast and misty backdrop on the artificial surface at Cedars School saw both sides have plenty of possession in the early stages but with no real threat, but the game lit up just ahead of the mid-way point when Hartwig scored the first of her brace.
Collecting the ball some twenty-five yards out she advanced forward before unleashing a dipping drive over the outstretched arms of Wanderers keeper Megan Jackson in spectacular fashion.
She then doubled her tally just past the half hour when a maroon attack broke down high up the pitch, the clearance sent long resulted in a pair of blue shirts up against an isolated defender, again a clever lift over the stricken shot stopper extending their lead.
Substitute Angel Burnham then came into the fray and looked likely to add to the score, one good chance just ahead of the break saw her chase a lob over the top and she left her marker behind, Jackson making the block with a follow up hooked to safety.
The second half again started with plenty of end-to-end action but with little danger to those donning the gloves, a Leighton throw worked into Aimi McGilloway allowed her to thump goalwards forcing a two-handed save pushing away for a corner.
Lily-Rose Hack drove over before team mate Burnham went close on a couple of occasions, the first from twenty yards rose over the bar, the next from the edge of the box curled agonisingly wide of the furthest upright by just millimetres.
Just as the contest appeared to be drifting towards a conclusion, Wheathampstead pulled one back when Natasha Braggs fed in Scott behind the blue rearguard, she stroked the ball inside the near post, but it did not motivate any late drama. F/T: 2-1
