A solitary Keiran Stares header along with a last gasp penalty save from Will Cowey ensured Redcar Town took all three points from the Trunk Road Derby; Grangetown Boys Club enjoying a record crowd for the opening game of the Good Friday groundhop matches.
An early morning kick-off saw over five hundred descend upon ‘The Boysie’, only in their second ever season in the National League System, the hosts left wondering what could have been had they made the most of their few chances during the contest.
But at the final whistle it was those adorned in blue & white that celebrated not only their keepers added on time heroics, but more importantly another win on the road towards their Ebac Northern League Division Two title.
Almost straight from the start Lewis Martin seized on a loose ball across the eighteen-yard line but could only find waiting gloves, the amber & black shirts continued to press and won a succession of corners however could not find a way through a resolute Redcar rearguard.
As the half wore on, the visitors started to mount some pressure of their own, McCorie Carmichael forced home custodian Joseph Hood to his left to push away with both hands, the frontman did then net ten minutes before the break but a raised flag intervened.
But he was not to be denied for long, as within moments he met a Joseph Taylor corner to loop a header over the keeper and in; he was to have the first chance after the interval as he latched onto a long ball over the top, allowing it to bounce then unleashing a dipping drive over the bar.
Goal scoring opportunities were few and far between from there, as the game drew towards a close both shot stoppers were called upon, Tom Liddle for Grangetown drove straight at Cowey, at the opposing end Hood fell to his left to comfortably gather a Craig Gott free kick.
Four minutes into added time came the penalty drama, as Benji Urwin turned in front of goal he went down under a challenge from behind, Martin taking responsibility but could only watch as a superb diving save pushed away. F/T: 0-1
