Durham United ended their home campaign in Ebac Northern League Division Two with a win over Esh Winning, however were made to sweat in the latter stages as they surrendered a two-goal lead; the visitors equalising just nine minutes from time.
The university outfit were indebted to their striker Phil Kay who struck twice during the remainder to complete his hattrick for the evening and sink the hearts of those in yellow and green whose wretched season eventually concluded with them finishing bottom of the table.
With tired legs aplenty, a good attendance for the tenth fixture of the weekend groundhop witnessed the best game of the day if not of the trip, once the hosts scored a second after the break it had appeared all over, but it’s never over until the final whistle!
The contest sparked into life on the half hour and in some style too, a set piece seemingly cleared fell to Kay some twenty-three yards out, he calmy swung his left boot and volleyed past the stationary Esh custodian Taylor Bell.
Despite most of the play coming from those in claret, it took until just before the hour for them to strike again, Dan Rehimbeck feeding Tomas Boothroyd to the right of the box and he fired low across the face in to the opposite corner, calls for offside rebuked.
But Winning pulled one back within moments as Isaac Jowett smashed into the net from the edge of the arc, and they could have levelled almost immediately as Aaron Zamor escaped upfield, upon nearing the target he shaped to shoot but Noah Melville slid in to block.
The resulting corner curled over Sam Allen in the United goal, but with no one there to convert, it deflected out for another, their next attack saw Jackson Cherrie drive down the left before his effort was punched away, but he was not to be denied for long.
With eighty-one showing on the clock, he equalised after turning home from the edge of the six-yard area to spark jubilant scenes from his team mates, however from there Kay took centre stage as he scored twice to secure his treble and the three points.
He fired his side back in front as he met a cross from the right unchallenged and simply couldn’t miss and then put the game to bed in injury time when put through the visitor’s rearguard to race away and slot low past Bell. F/T: 4-2
