Despite their lowly position in the Uhlsport Somerset County League Division One table, Glastonbury kicked off the Sunday Groundhop matches in explosive style, racing into a five-goal lead by the interval to leave Westfield somewhat shell shocked.
The visitors did manage a couple of retaliatory strikes late in the game but it was all too little too late, in fairness the margin could have been much greater under the warm blue skies at the picturesque Abbey Moor Stadium witnessed by another crowd of over two hundred.
Those in old gold and black had lost their previous three matches, conceding seven without reply, but were four up inside half an hour leaving those around the perimeter of the pitch in awe of not only the settings, but also the performance!
It took just seven minutes for the deadlock to be broken, Nick Mortimer from the right picked out the unmarked Cam Nicholson in front of goal, and he had plenty of time to choose his spot and plant firmly into the corner.
It was soon two as another inswinger delivered into the six-yard area saw a melee of shirts go up, Aidan White rising up against a Westfield defender and keeper with the ball bouncing off one of them into the back of the net!
Harry Whittaker was next on the scoresheet as his twenty-yard free kick cannoned off the defensive wall to wrong foot Josh Matthews between the sticks and rebound into the empty space; the first real chance for the crayons came as Jack Hulford headed over at the far post.
The respite was brief as Michael Madge scooped over the bar from close range, but a fourth duly arrived with ten minutes to the break, Mortimer meeting a cross from the left to control and drill into the bottom corner.
From the restart Madge was released down the right edge of the box, as Matthews raced out to meet him, the Glastonbury man lifted over him but momentum saw him floored by the shot stopper, as the ball drifted wide the referee pointed to the spot, Phil Wake making no mistake.
White almost added a sixth before half-time with a dipping effort that flew narrowly over the top, soon after the restart Whittaker latched onto a long punt upfield but his attempted lob bounced comfortably past the upright, but from there the game understandably lost some pace.
The visitors started to claw their way back into the contest as substitutions interrupted the flow, but it took a late penalty from Ryan Allen for them to finally reduce the arrears, and in the final moments Morgan Jones added their second with a header at the far post. F/T: 5-2
