Daniel Griggs struck in the 93rd minute to win the Anagram Records Trophy for Chipperfield Corinthians back in May, ending Shenfield AFC’s hopes of reclaiming the silverware they had lifted just two years earlier.
For the Hertfordshire Senior League outfit, it was three cup final wins out of three inside six weeks, having already secured both the Herts FA Centenary Trophy and County Norman Appleby Trophy; they were to go on and secure the HSL title and with it, the quadruple, just seven days later!
The Essex club can consider themselves almightily unlucky having finished runners up in the Essex Olympian League, although they did manage to pick themselves up after this late defeat to go and win the EOFL Senior Divisional Cup on the following Tuesday.
The team in blue & white got off to the perfect start taking a very early lead, captain Luke Williamson retrieving a clearance on the far edge of the box was brought down by Sam Hutchings with the match official immediately pointing to the spot; Marlon Stratford making no mistake.
The AFC skipper then drove into the side netting, and George Borley thumped over the top; at the opposite end a Lewis Toomey header repeated the feat and as the half drew towards a conclusion, he also snatched another chance off target.
There was still time for the striker to force Shenfield keeper Dan Blockley low down to his right to push a free kick round his post, from the resulting corner George Nash smashed too high before pulling wide from six yards as the red & black shirts cranked up the pressure.
Shortly after the interval Corinthians custodian Zak Green almost got caught in two minds, a lump upfield for Jack Panons to chase saw the shot stopper advance, then stop and retreat, with bodies waiting in the middle the cross wasn’t quick enough, and an outstretched arm pushed to safety.
Griggs then hit the upright amidst a goalmouth scramble, the next blue counterattack set up when Alex Tredgett stole possession in midfield and hooked over his own shoulder, releasing Panons who lifted above the woodwork by some distance.
An equaliser eventually came at the midway point, an initial cross was almost diverted into his own net by Henry Rowe, but the resulting set piece curled into the back post saw Sam Hutchings climb highest to power a header into the corner.
Opportunities went begging but just as extra-time seemed inevitable, a series of poor deliveries were dealt with until the third or fourth clearance fell to the incoming match winner, he thumped home through a crowded area to spark wild celebrations.
With an additional seven minutes added, those of an Essex persuasion threw the proverbial kitchen sink at the Hertfordshire rearguard but just could not find a leveller. F/T: 2-1
